Mike was an eLearning innovator long before it was even a learning technology category, and he brings that same passion to work every day as Absorb Founder and CEO. As a Lieutenant-Colonel and 24-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, Mike knows how much dedication and drive it takes to fuel great learning experiences. This insight has informed product design since the beginning in 2002 when Mike founded Absorb to fill a void in the LMS marketplace and provide a fresh approach to corporate training software.
Today, Mike leads the vision for Absorb—challenging the way learning happens and never settling until he’s solved the tech questions of tomorrow. From SMB to the Enterprise, Mike engineers Absorb to be ahead of the leading trends in learning. This passion gained notice and earned Absorb a $59 Million growth investment from Silversmith Capital Partners in 2017.
Mike further takes pride in cultivating a unique Absorb culture: a truly collaborative work environment, full of talented thinkers who deliver fantastic products to a noteworthy client list of household names.
In his free time, Mike mentors tech entrepreneurs as a member of the A100, inspiring the next generation of digital innovators. He also enjoys spending time with his family and driving race cars—on a track—crazy fast.
Mike earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Calgary, in Alberta.
Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer
More than just a numbers guy, Mark Simner brings deep operational and strategic skills to his dual role as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operations Officer at Absorb. Driving operational efficiency across every department, Mark ensures Absorb delivers an industry-leading customer experience at every touch point, optimizing the corporate financials as he goes.
Mark brings impressive international experience to Absorb, including four years as Financial Controller at GM Asset Management (now Promark Global Advisors), with $160 Billion in assets under management, as well as being CFO for Accertify, Inc. a subsidiary of American Express. Mark’s eLearning experience began at Varsity Tutors, where as CFO the company raised over $50 Million in Series C funding to support its student learning platform.
Having spent time working in nine different countries, Mark’s a true globetrotter that brings vibrancy and a love of adventure to his work at Absorb. His travel bug now finds flight watching The Amazing Race—a guilty pleasure, for sure—and yes, he’s seen every episode!
Mark began his education in England, earning qualifications as an Associate Chartered Management Accountant and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. He then crossed the pond to attend New York University where he graduated with a Master of Business Administration in Finance—with distinction—and was the recipient of the Stern Scholar designation.
Executive Vice President, Global Sales
Al Kinnear loves to sell, which makes him the ideal guy to lead all aspects of Absorb sales operations as Executive Vice President of Global Sales. Delivering on double-digit revenue growth and international expansion takes a larger-than-life personality—and boundless energy. No sweat for Al. He simply taps vast stores of tools, strategies and infectious positivity to inspire his team, secure new sales, and grow product and service penetration within the existing Absorb client base.
With over 10+ years of Absorb expertise, Al is a trusted advocate seeking ways to fuel exceptional learning experiences with Absorb training software—all while propelling selling velocity for his Sales Executive team.
Al’s entrepreneurial spirit served him well while launching a successful digital venture in 2002, one that still thrives. Today, Al is fully invested in leading Global Sales at Absorb, overseeing expansions into new markets and continents. Under Al’s leadership, Absorb has opened offices in London, Boston and Sydney in an 18-month span, and is currently looking ahead to China.
When not selling, Al lives for the outdoors, hiking, biking, skiing and fly fishing for Bull and Cutthroat Trout before relaxing by a crackling campfire.
Al earned his degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Manitoba and holds Certified Public Accountant designations in both Canada and the United States.
Executive Vice President, Operations
Craig Smith serves as the Executive Vice President of Operations for Absorb, a role that taps his wealth of IT experiences spanning QA, Support, Systems Administration, Application Development, among others.
Rising through the Absorb leadership ranks, Craig started as the Director of Technology before pivoting to lead Operations as its Vice President. Craig continues to leverage his IT roots to elevate the Absorb customer experience, drawing on his time as a developer at Honeywell International, building websites for clients at Autodata Solutions and leading a team of developers at AGAT Laboratories.
Today, the intensity Craig applies to increase operational efficiency at Absorb is likewise applied to his passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, that is, when he’s not injured from doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Craig earned both his Bachelor and Master of Environmental Studies degrees from the University of Waterloo and obtained his Master of Business Administration degree from the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary.
Senior Vice President, Marketing
Combine over two decades of honed marketing skills with a passion for innovation and growth, and you can see why Jill Adams totally rocks out as Vice President of Marketing for Absorb. Jill sets global marketing strategy, drives awareness and demand for Absorb products and leads a cross-functional team of marketing pros driving the company growth trajectory up and to the right.
Prior to joining Absorb, Jill was the Vice President of Demand Generation at Globoforce, a high-growth SaaS company in the human capital management space. She was responsible for all aspects of the company’s lead generation efforts and was instrumental in leading the company to dramatic revenue growth—and recognition as an industry leader. Jill also drove operational excellence at companies ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies, such as Progress Software, RSA Security (a division of DELL/EMC) and IBM.
In her free time—and when not orchestrating home renovation projects—Jill enjoys being outside with her husband and three children: on the beach, on the soccer field, in the hockey rink, on the ski slopes or just hanging by the pool.
Jill earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Miami University (Ohio).
Senior Vice President, Product
As Senior Vice President of Product, Craig Basford works at the intersection of strategy, engineering and design, taking great ideas and turning them into products that solve client challenges. He embraces the constant pace of change that is the modern technology sector, always building for what’s to come while staying grounded “in the now” through strong client input and collaboration.
A charismatic technical thinker, Craig has been an influential force powering Absorb growth; initially by defining the client experience as Director of LMS Experience, and currently by heading up the Absorb Product team.
In his spare time, Craig risks his life by skiing slopes far too advanced for him, annoys his neighbors by playing the violin and holds unreasonably long conversations with his dog.
Craig holds a Master’s of Business Administration from the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary and earned his Bachelor of Commerce in Management Information Systems from the University of Alberta.
Vice President, Partner Program
As the Vice President, Partner Program, Jennifer Kennedy collaborates with great companies looking for win-win integrations and channel partnerships with Absorb. By driving LMS integrations with a growing roster of companies like Salesforce, ADP, BambooHR and Namely, Jen elevates both customer value and the quality of customer eLearning experiences. It’s a perfect role for Jen, who loves building relationships and delivering smart training software to make life easier for Absorb clients.
Before taking the helm of the Absorb Partner Program, Jen excelled in Project Management and New Product Development at Absorb, building on her experience as a Project Management Analyst at General Dynamics Mission Systems.
Her drive, work ethic and resourcefulness took hold early. As a trained violinist in a string orchestra, Jen learned that the freedom to innovate follows learning the rules so well you know which ones you can break. It’s an ethos that fuels her many passions, including a love for all things on two wheels—from mountain and road bikes to motorcycles, as well as for music, travel and surfing.
Jen earned her Economics degree from Carleton University and is pursuing her Executive MBA at Queen’s University and Cornell University.
